A standout in attractiveness plant. This specimen was seen on May 12, 2010 - a week later than the plant view shot on the gallery page.
Single inflorescence view.
Inflorescence from top.
A pattern we've noticed in two fabaceae recently (see astragalus cibarius) is that many of the flower-bearing stems in plants with colored caylx tubes are colored with the same hue as the caylx.
Is this something in the soil? Or a variety of the main species? Dr. Lavin is investigating this.
The stem pigment is not always present. This stem was branching from another larger flower stem with pigment. Clearly the caylx will be colored.
This less developed little plant was sighted a week following the first instance of nuttalliana. Other plants were in proximity, all with the same intriguing caylx pigment.
Leaves entire, opposite, midvein, hairs lanate and mostly appressed, all on the back of the leaf.
