Bastard Toadflax (Comandra umbellata), family Santalaceae (Sandlewood)
Does any plant really deserve such a name. This unfortuante sounding allusion to an illegitimate amphibian does have a somewhat reasonable basis. Some botanists of yore thought that the leaves of the plants looked like those of toadflax. But these are not toadflaxes. Ok then. Most often the petals of the flowers are white, with the occasional pink hue, hence this inclusion in the whites. Stay tuned for the many uses of these plants by Native Americans and other cultures.Flower
