Fairyduster -or- False mesquite (Calliandra eriophylla), family Fabaceae (Pes/Bean)
Another member of the huge Fabaceae faamily although in a much smaller genus, numbering only 250 species. There are two var. for eriophylla: eriophylla and chamaedrys.
USES: The YAVAPAI people made a decoction of leaves and stems taken after childbirth.

Plant location: Anza-Borrego visitor center - California - March 13, 2017
Fairyduster is found only in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas. However the plants are present but rare in California and Texas. See the BONAP distribution map for this and a few other species in the genus, here. Given the rarity of the plants presence in California we assume it was placed at the visitor center rather than growing there on its own.Plant -

No big surprise to find pods along with flowers on the plant. It was advanced in it's bloom season when we found it. -
