Desert Mariposa Lily (Calochortus kennedyi var kennedyi), family Liliaceae
The striking depth of red color to these flowers was hard to capture in photographs. When viewed in person they will take your breath away! The identifying difference between this var and the main species seems to be location. We have not found a botanical key that specifies distinctions between the two. There is a second var. of kennedyi named munzii that is yellow.
Many Calochortus species are known to be useful for food and medicinal purposes by Native Americans but this species has no records of such uses.
