California Fishhook Cactus -or- Strawberry Cactus -or- Strawberry Pincusion or Fishhook Cactus (Mammillaria dioica), family Cactaceae (Cactus)
Little did we know when we found this species that it was such a rarity in the United States - it is found ONLY in California and Baja.
USES: Per the interesting website NORTH AMERICAN ETHNOBOTANY: The Diegueno people ate the raw fruits of this cactus.

Bloom season: February through April, with fruits maturing in summer.
