Oneflowered broomrape -or- One-Flower Cancer Root -or- Single-flowered Broomrape (Orobanche uniflora), family Orobanchaceae (Broomrape)
This species is parasitic on the roots of other plants, commonly herbs such as sage, for one. We did not see any herbs growing near our specimen. Various species of Orobanche were used by Native American tribes but uniflora shows no records specifically. Flower -
Plant location:
Mark found this specimen during our exploration of Shelf Road, between Cripple Creek and Canon City in Colorado - June 21, 2015. The species is located throughout the United States and up into much of Canada.

Bloom season:
June and July, in Colorado. Notice that this plant does not produce true foliage in the usual sense.
