Badlands Mule-ears -or- Desert Mule's Ears -or- Sandpaper Mules Ears (Scabrethia scabra), family Asteraceae (Aster/Sunflower)
Genus renamed from Wyethia to Scabrethia. Information on the species can be found under both names. See the complete Flora of North America botanic key, here.USES: Native American uses of this species can be found on the wonderful website Native American Ethnobotany (which has a new look and feel): The Hopi, Navajo, and Kayenta tribes all used the plant as an emetic. Hopi people in particular used the plants this way less frequently. They found the plants lethal in cases where it was not vomited.

Bloom season: Commonly June to October. Al Schneider mentions on his website, SW Colorado Wildflowers, finding plants in bloom in early May.
